Eco Material Technologies, a leading producer of sustainably sourced cementitious materials and other near zero carbon cement replacement materials, has just announced a partnership with Georgia Power to harvest coal ash that has been sent to landfills, specifically Plant Bowen, to be used for their products.

The new project will divert 600,000 tons of ash per year away from landfills and to be used to make sustainable cement. Eco Material Technologies claims that the project will prevent millions of tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. Portland cement production accounts for 8% of global CO2 emissions. As one of the first projects of its kind, this partnership introduces an innovation that could theoretically be applied to cement production across the globe, as coal fired power plants still produce a large portion of the energy consumed across the globe.
