Generate Capital (San Francisco, CA) has raised $2 billion in new funding from existing and new investors to back clean energy projects that build on its infrastructure-as-a-service model. Generate develops and operates projects that help businesses, governments and communities use energy more efficiently and cut their carbon emissions.

The firm charges its customers a monthly fee to use the infrastructure that helps them avoid the high capital costs or having to grapple with new technologies. According to CEO Scott Jacobs, "Generate often teams up with various clean-energy developers in its deals, either backing the business directly or the projects it builds, sometimes both." Recent investments include a food waste-processing plant in Drumbo, Ontario, co-developed with Canadian recycler StormFisher Ltd. Generate will use the new money to expand beyond North America into other regions, including Europe, and into sectors like water and agriculture, said Jacobs.
