ReCommunity Tucson Facility Grand Opening Today
State-of-the-art facility simplifies recycling, plans to create 80-plus green jobs
As Tucson's new recycling partner, ReCommunity and the City of Tucson will hold a facility grand opening ceremony today to celebrate the new "single-stream" recycling operation. The facility offers a more efficient, effective recycling program, allowing residents to use a single recycling collection bin, while also providing processing services to more residents, generating more recyclables, and leading to less land-filled material.
Media are invited to the ceremony at the state-of-the-art processing center located at 3780 E. Ajo Way (southwest corner of Alvernon Way) from 10 a.m. to Noon. Mayor Rothschild will speak at 10:30 a.m. with additional comments from company representatives to follow.
"With innovative processes and technologies and totally committed people, we are building a market-leading recycling and resource company, partnering with forward-thinking communities to transform waste into valuable resource assets for economic, social and environmental value," says Sean Duffy, ReCommunity President and COO.
Following a $7 million investment in a brand new, state-of-the-art processing facility, ReCommunity began serving the City of Tucson in July. At full capacity, the fully-automated facility will create more than 80 green jobs in Tucson. ReCommunity accepts a wider array of plastic containers numbered one to seven. In addition to paper fibers, aluminum, glass and ferrous containers, residents can now toss these recyclables into a single curbside recycling bin, which makes it easier and more likely recyclables are captured and not discarded in landfills. Prior to ReCommunity, residents could only recycle plastic bottles and jugs numbered one and two. In addition, ReCommunity will create a recycling education center at the facility for community tours and school groups.
"The partnership with ReCommunity is exciting news for City of Tucson residents who are already committed to recycling. By taking nearly all plastics, it is easier for our customers who don't have to worry about looking at numbers or lists," said Nancy Petersen, Environmental Services.
By making recycling easier with single-stream processing technology, ReCommunity enables residents and businesses in communities across the United States to increase their recycling volume by 20 percent to 60 percent. At full capacity, the ReCommunity Tucson facility will prevent more than 232,165 metric tons of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gases from being emitted annually, which is equivalent to taking about 42,523 cars off the road each year.
ReCommunity also operates recycling and recovery facilities in Phoenix and Scottsdale. The company has a total of 36 facilities operating in 13 states with more than 1500 employees. "We are thrilled to bring the Recovery RevolutionTM to Tucson with this new single-stream recycling facility," says Duffy. "ReCommunity is a purpose-driven company. This state-of-the-art Tucson facility plays a significant role in expanding our footprint in Arizona and in enabling the Recovery Revolution to benefit more communities."
