Landfill Energy Systems (LES) has begun operating a 3.2 megawatt landfill gas-to-energy plant at the Millersville Landfill in Severn, MD. The facility employs two Caterpillar G3520 engines to generate enough electricity to power 2,000 homes and which is being sold into the PJM market. LES, which is owned by Energy Investors Funds (EIF), designed, built and is operating the project as it does with its other 23 landfill energy projects around the US.

Landfill Energy Systems Commences Operations in Severn, Maryland 3.2 MW Landfill Gas-To-Energy Plant
Landfill Energy Systems ("LES") announced today that it has commenced operations on a 3.2 MW landfill gas fueled renewable-energy power plant located in Severn, MD. The facility consists of two Caterpillar G3520 engine-generator sets consuming biomethane from the Millersville Landfill and Resource Recovery Facility. Both the Landfill and the generating plant are owned by Anne Arundel County. LES designed and built the project for the County and will provide Operations & Maintenance services under a long term contract. The County sells the plant's electricity into the PJM market. Enough power is generated at the plant to provide electricity for approximately 2,000 homes.
"Landfill Energy Systems is happy to part of this exciting project and the opportunity to work with such a unique public-private partnership" said Richard DiGia, President and CEO of LES. "The County has been extremely helpful during our development and construction process. This plant creates local jobs, brings reliable, renewable energy to the local electric grid, and reduces CO2 emissions equivalent to more than 5,000 cars annually." The project was powered by the teamwork of Anne Arundel County, the Northeast Maryland Waste Disposal Authority, LES and the Department of Energy with funding support from an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant.
"Identifying projects that use alternative methods to produce energy instead of coal and crude oil is vitally important to the future health of our environment," said Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold. "This project generates electricity with the methane we previously collected, burned and discarded. I am proud that this public-private partnership will pay dividends for taxpayers and the environment. I want to thank our partners, Landfill Energy Systems Inc., Arundel Community Development Services Inc., the Northeast Maryland Waste Disposal Authority, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy."
The Millersville plant is the 40th plant owned or operated by LES, which holds the rights to 45 landfills and operates in 16 states, producing over 200 MW of base load renewable electric power and renewable natural gas. These projects reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 9 million tons per year.
About Landfill Energy Systems
Landfill Energy Systems was founded in 1986 and is one of the landfill gas industry's largest and oldest privately owned developers. The company takes full responsibility for all aspects of the design, engineering, equipment procurement, construction, installation, commissioning, and operations of landfill gas-fired renewable energy projects. Landfill Energy Systems is owned by Energy Investors Funds (EIF). EIF was founded in 1987 as the first private equity fund manager dedicated exclusively to the independent power and electric utility industry. Its consistent, proven investment strategy is to create geographically and technologically diversified portfolios of electric power-related assets that provide superior risk-adjusted equity returns with current cash flow and capital appreciation. As an investment manager, EIF seeks to mitigate commodity risk (fuel and electricity) by focusing primarily on acquiring power assets in the United States that have long-term off-take contracts. EIF has mobilized over $4 billion in capital raised in eight funds, and currently manages five private equity funds from its offices in Boston, New York, and San Francisco. These funds have made over 100 diversified investments that have an underlying asset value greater than $15 billion. EIF has over 3,675 MW of capacity in operation and under construction, as well as an additional 2,875 MW under development. For more information visit www.eif.com.
