Renewable energy developer Fortistar (White Plains, NY) has begun operating a 6.4 megawatt landfill gas-to-energy project in partnership with Republic Services at Republic's Old Dominion Landfill in Richmond, VA. Old Dominion Electric Cooperative is buying the electricity under a power purchase agreement. Mark Comora, President of Fortistar said "We support and agree with Virginia's "All of the Above" renewable energy approach. Energy from landfills is a proven cost effective source of renewable energy - and can be a part of every community's energy strategy." This is Fortistar's third project in Virginia and its fifteenth with Republic Services. The company currently has ownership stakes in over 60 projects in North America, with total generation capacity of exceeding 3,000 megawatts.

FORTISTAR announces commercial operation of a new 6.4 MW landfill energy facility in Virginia
4,500 Virginia residents are now receiving cost efficient renewable energy provided from their trash.
FORTISTAR is proud to announce commercial operation of its 6.4 MW Old Dominion landfill gas to energy project - completed in partnership with Republic Services and Old Dominion Electric Cooperative. The facility commenced deliveries of renewable power to ODEC on January 4, 2012.
Beginning with local trash collection, Republic Services employs an integrated municipal solid waste practice at its Old Dominion landfill, putting the resulting landfill gas to beneficial use. A wellfield collects the gas produced and feeds engine-generators that produce renewable electricity. The electricity is then delivered to ODEC who then distributes the power to their customers, Virginia residents. Fortistar built, owns and operates the renewable energy facility.
Lt. Governor Bill Bolling, speaking at an event in November 2011, remarked, "I am delighted to dedicate Central Virginia's newest landfill-gas-to-energy plant today. This state-of-the-art facility will provide Virginians with improved access to clean energy supply."

This will be the third landfill gas to energy project FORTISTAR owns and operates in the state of Virginia, powering over 10,000 residents. It adds to the 14 active projects FORTISTAR owns and operates on Republic Services landfills, and is the first project delivering power to ODEC.
