Covanta Energy Corp. (Morristown, NJ) said it signed contracts with the Connecticut municipalities of East Hartford, Guilford, Madison, and Newington to provide them with "sustainable waste management services" that includes processing and disposal at one of its four waste-to-energy plants in the state. The services that Covanta will provide encompass recycling and composting, as well as waste-to-energy and other waste disposal services. In doing so, Covanta beat out the Connecticut Resource Recovery Authority (CRRA) which had the contracts for the last 30 years. Covanta said that by bundling these services, the four communities will realize savings in the form of reduced disposal costs and rebates for recycling. "These towns did not want to landfill, and we heard them loud and clear," said Steve Diaz, a vice president and regional business manager for Covanta. "Covanta's infrastructure and strategic relationships in the region enable us to provide sustainable waste management solutions at affordable, stable rates."

Four Connecticut Municipalities Partner with Covanta Energy for Sustainable Waste Management Services

Covanta Energy Corporation announced today four new partnerships with Connecticut municipalities for sustainable waste management services. Newington, East Hartford, Guilford and Madison have all signed contracts for services that will include sustainable waste disposal, recycling and composting. Covanta is the largest owner and operator of Energy-from-Waste facilities in North America including local facilities in Wallingford, Bristol and Preston, Connecticut and Springfield, Massachusetts.

The communities were attracted to Covanta's ability to offer one stop shopping for waste disposal, recycling and composting. By bundling services, municipalities are able to save money on disposal costs and get credit back in the form of a rebate for recycling. In addition to the other benefits, Covanta offers shorter queue times for waste haulers, which will result in notable efficiencies.

"Given today's economic environment, the opportunity to provide our citizens with real stability and predictability when it comes to managing the cost of our waste collection and disposal programs, is one of the primary reasons for signing up with Covanta," said Newington Town Manager John Salomone.

"The Covanta contract offers East Hartford significant cost savings for waste disposal and other services, while ensuring that our town continues to be environmentally responsible," said East Hartford Mayor Marcia Leclerc. "We are satisfied that Covanta can provide sustainable services at reasonable rates."

As part of the deals, Covanta will also provide outreach funds to each community. These funds can be used for a variety of projects including hazardous household waste collections and energy-from-waste and recycling education programs.

"The Towns of Guilford and Madison have long had a coordinated approach to solid waste disposal. This new agreement extends the cooperation to include a private company, Covanta. The new agreement lowers the fees that the Towns pay for disposal of our waste and opens the door to savings for our citizens who are using private pick-up companies. And further, it confirms that our waste is converted to usable energy and is not placed in a landfill somewhere," said Town of Madison First Selectman Fillmore McPherson.

"Our new agreement will provide Guilford and Madison a savings in the cost of our Transfer Station operations. We are looking forward to Covanta's service when our current trash contract ends in June of 2012," added Town of Guilford First Selectman Joseph Mazza.

"Covanta applauds these municipal leaders for seeking truly sustainable waste management for their towns," commented Steve Diaz, vice president and regional business manager for Covanta. "These towns did not want to landfill and we heard them loud and clear," continued Mr. Diaz. "Covanta's infrastructure and strategic relationships in the region enable us to provide sustainable waste management solutions at affordable, stable rates. We look forward to providing our new partners with the world-class service Covanta is known for."

Service is slated to begin in 2012 with the agreements ranging from three to five years. The new contracts represent approximately 45,000 tons of municipal solid waste per year.
