Recology (San Francisco, CA), formerly known as Norcal Waste Systems, is buying Seattle, WA-based waste company CleanScapes in a deal estimated to be worth $66 million. CleanScapes has about 280 employees and earned revenue of $47.3 million in 2010. However, the deal is still subject to regulatory approval of the Federal Trade Commission. "We don't have the resources of Recology," said CleanScapes CEO Chris Martin. "We don't have the compost or transfer facilities. This will allow us to leverage their expertise and stronger balance sheet." Recology, which is owned by its 2,200 employees, has been steadily expanding northward. Last year it signed a $38 million, 7-year waste contract with Portland, Oregon's Metro waste system. In July, the City of San Francisco, CA approved a 10-year contract worth $112 million to ship its waste by rail to Recology's Wheatland Landfill in nearby Yuba County.
