Greenstar North America (Houston, TX) announced opening a new recycling plant, the first "single-stream" facility in Houston, TX. The company invested $7 million in upgrading an existing facility. The new 90,000 square foot plant, announced last September, has the capacity to process 15,000 tons of material each month. Single-stream recycling, which allows for the processing of comingled recyclable materials using sophisticated sorting machines, reduces hauling expense and boosts recovery rates by making it easier for consumers. Greenstar CEO Matt Delnick says single stream has helped cities across Texas increase recycling rates, citing a 300 percent increase in Dallas, 200 percent in San Antonio and 75 percent in Austin. Greenstar, which is a subsidiary of Dublin Ireland-based NTR plc, handles about 2 million tons of recyclables per year through a network of 14 processing facilities in the US.

PRESS RELEASE

Greenstar Recycling Announces First Single Stream Recycling Facility in Houston

  • Local Recycling Volumes Anticipated to Rise

Greenstar Recycling (www.GreenstarRecycling.com), a leading recycler in North America, announced today that it has officially opened the first single stream recycling facility in Houston. Single stream is an innovation in recycling that allows participants to combine all recyclables into one bin – greatly increasing the convenience to participating households and businesses. Greenstar has invested $7 million in upgrading to single stream recycling and will create green jobs locally. The facility will be opened by the City of Houston's Chief Sustainability Officer, Laura Spanjian, and Greenstar's CEO Matt Delnick at a private grand opening event today. Greenstar's new partner, the Houston Dynamo, will also be on hand to support the Houston message, "Recycle and Everybody Wins."

"Greenstar is committed to increasing Houston's recycling rates and we are making the necessary investments locally to deliver results," confirmed Matt Delnick, CEO of Greenstar. "The people of Houston want to make the right choice and recycle. Now we will be able to recycle with convenience in Houston while reducing the cost of disposal and preserving our environment."

Greenstar has helped cities across Texas increase their recycling rates with the convenience of single stream – 300% in Dallas, 200% in San Antonio and 75% in Austin. Houston is now poised for growth and Greenstar expects recycling rates to increase now that single stream is available for businesses, residential subdivisions and municipalities.

Greenstar has upgraded its existing facility on Brittmoore Road in Northwest Houston. The facility has a long history of providing recycling services with operations dating back to the 1970s. The facility upgrades include new technologies to automate the sorting process so that materials come in mixed, but end up cleanly separated, baled and ready for sale as inputs into new products. The 90,000 square foot facility has the capacity to process 15,000 tons of material each month.

"Greenstar believes that recycling should be at the core of all sustainability efforts," commented Daryl Smith, General Manager of Greenstar Houston. "We are proud to be the first to offer Houston single stream – a convenient, sustainable recycling solution."
