IESI Acquires Recycling Facility in North Austin
IESI Corporation ("IESI"), a subsidiary of IESI-BFC Ltd., announced today it has acquired Central Texas Secure Shredding and its recycling facility in Pflugerville, Texas. Central Texas Secure Shredding provides secure document destruction processes that include the collection of documents in locked containers, transportation in locked vehicles, mixing of documents from multiple sources prior to shredding, baling and recycling of the materials. All processes are documented and include a Certificate of Destruction. The recycling facility will now be called IESI Central Texas Shredding and Recycling Facility. IESI plans to expand the facility's current document destruction processing services to incorporate a fully integrated single stream recycling process to efficiently serve the thriving communities in the Austin area by the third quarter of 2010.
The 20,000 square-foot IESI Central Texas Shredding and Recycling Facility will continue to provide secure document destruction processing and is, in addition, capable of processing 150 tons of recyclable material per day. The system will allow IESI the opportunity to expand its single stream processing capabilities. Because the facility will utilize the single-stream process, customers can combine paper, glass, metals, cardboard and plastics all in one large container. The greater Austin area is a progressive market and a leader in environmental conservation and innovation. The citizens in Austin and surrounding communities can be assured their recyclable materials will be handled in an environmentally friendly manner by IESI.
This acquisition demonstrates IESI's ongoing commitment to environmental initiatives. In August 2010, IESI's Seneca Meadows Landfill, in Seneca Falls, New York, opened the 600 plus acre Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve - part of the company's eleven hundred acre native plant conservation project - which comes complete with seven miles of hiking trails. The gateway to the Seneca Meadows Wetland preserve is a Leed certified community education center which educates all ages in partnership with the Audubon Society. In 2009, IESI constructed and opened the first LEED Certified privately-funded single-stream material recovery facility (MRF) in the United States located in McKinney, Texas. "We are very proud of our environmental and recycling efforts," said Mickey Flood, President and CEO of IESI. "I believe these efforts are clearly testimonials to our leadership in the environmental industry."
IESI's sustainable efforts are also reflected in the amount of material it diverts from landfills across the country. In 2009, IESI, along with parent company IESI-BFC Ltd., diverted more than 500,000 tons of material from landfills, including more than 300,000 tons of paper. This is enough paper to save nearly 5.2 million trees. In addition, IESI's Seneca Meadows Tire Recycling center processed more than 1.5 million automotive tires for re-use.
To educate communities about the importance of recycling and taking care of our environment, IESI also offers many learning opportunities for local schools and community organizations. At numerous IESI community locations, activities include in-school programs, school field day programs, school literature distribution, student and adult site tours, public open houses, and guest lectures.
IESI communities also recognize the company's commitment to the environment. Recently, IESI received the Large Business of the Year Award from the Pflugerville, Texas Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, IESI has been awarded "Business of the Year" honors in McKinney, Texas, Iowa Park, Texas, Frisco, Texas, The Colony, Texas, and Seneca Meadows, New York. IESI has also received numerous awards and recognitions by environmental organizations including Keep Texas Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful.
IESI feels it is extremely important to be active in its communities and is constantly involved in city-wide trash clean-up programs. IESI employees are active on environmental boards and commissions. IESI believes in partnering with its communities for a clean environment.
