Energy Answers International (Albany, NY) held a public meeting near south Baltimore, MD, to discuss its proposal to develop a $1 billion 120-megawatt waste-to-energy facility there. Project manager Kurt Kramer said that the facility would be built to gold LEED standards and employ boiler technology used in coal-burning power plants to generate electricity and steam from shredded municipal waste, tires, auto fluff and wood wastes. He said it would be more efficient and cleaner than standard waste-to-energy plants and exceed federal pollution-control requirements for emissions of particulates, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, mercury and lead, among other things, all while reducing waste otherwise headed to the landfill. The plant would employ about 200 once operational and contribute an estimated $30 million per year to the local economy. It would be financed in part by up to $300 million in federal economic stimulus funds.
