WCA Announces Opening of a Gas to Energy Project

WCA Waste Corporation (WCAA) announced today that it has began a Landfill-Gas-to-Energy project at the company owned Oak Grove Landfill in Arcadia, KS.

Waste Corporation of Kansas, the landfill owner and subsidiary, partnered with landfill gas developer Enerdyne Power Systems, Inc. of Matthews, NC to build a 1.6 Megawatt power plant fueled by landfill gas from Landfill. The new operating entity for this project is Oak Grove Power Producers LLC. Other major parties involved in the project include Westar Energy which is providing electrical interconnection services and Kansas City Board of Public Utilities which is purchasing the Green Power as well as the Renewable Energy Credits from the project.

The site features a 2,300 Horsepower 20 Cylinder Caterpillar 3520 Generator which has been altered to accept landfill gas. 1.6 Megawatts of renewable energy is estimated by the EPA to power roughly 1,000 average sized residential homes. The plant began operating on March 1, 2010.

The contributors are welcoming guests to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the site of the power plant on April 23, 2010. A representative from the EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program is expected to speak in support of the project. Though admission to the event is restricted, questions and other inquiries may be directed to oakgrove@landfillgroup.com.
