Republic Services Publishes Sustainability Report

  • Reflection of Republic's Commitment to the Environment, Naturally

Republic Services (NYSE: RSG) recently published its first sustainability report following its December 2008 merger with Allied Waste.

The report highlights some of the many innovative environmental projects and initiatives taking place throughout the company, from the nation's first solar energy cover on one of the company's landfills to reducing the amount of fuel and oil used by its vehicles. The document defines sustainability as protecting and enhancing the quality of the environment and making decisions which consider the environmental impact of everything the company does.

"The sustainability report was an opportunity to identify and discuss what we already do to protect the environment and to set a course to do more," said Jim O'Connor, CEO of Republic Services. "Being green is not just a philosophy at Republic. We've been doing it for years. From our landfills to our state-of-the-art recycling facilities--we've been dedicated to protecting the environment from the beginning." Republic will form a sustainability team to monitor the progress of its initiatives.

The report is available at www.republicservices.com/sustainability.

Additionally, Republic printed a limited number of reports. Printing was done on 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper with soy-based inks. The paper was produced using non-polluting wind generated electricity and is Forest Stewardship Council as well as Green Seal certified.
