The City of Billings Montana has signed a 40-year contract with Montana-Dakota Utilities (MDU) to build and operate a landfill gas-to-energy facility at its regional landfill. MDU will invest $8 million and pay estimated operating costs of $600,000 that will entitle them to 85% of the net sales of the landfill gas. This could generate $130 million over 40 years. The city for its part will receive 15% of the net gas sales, which is estimated to yield a return of at least $500,000 a year, or $20 million over 40 years.
