Environmental Industry Associations Hires Thom Metzger ss Director Of Communications And Public Affairs

Environmental Industry Associations (EIA) President and CEO, Bruce Parker, today announced the appointment of Thom Metzger as its director of communications and public affairs.

Metzger will be responsible for developing a broad strategic communications and public affairs strategy to enhance the voice of the National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) in the local and federal legislative and regulatory arenas, in which its members have significant financial and reputational interests. NSWMA is a part of EIA. Metzger, who brings more than 17 years of public affairs, media relations and marketing experience, also will develop plans for issue communications and media relations, and build effective relationships with media, opinion leaders and EIA's members.

Most recently, Metzger served as director of marketing and public relations for the American Chemistry Council (ACC), where he helped oversee a $20 million public education campaign to increase awareness of the chemistry industry's contributions to modern life. In addition to overseeing the day-to-day management for this national campaign, Metzger managed other public relations and marketing activities related to ACC's advocacy activities.

"We are pleased that Thom is joining our team. He has a track record of measurable success and brings relevant knowledge and skill to this position from his previous work experiences," stated Parker. "His record makes him an excellent choice for his new responsibilities, and on behalf of our entire staff, we are looking forward to working with Thom to build a first-rate communications and public relations program."

"I am excited to accept this new challenge," added Metzger. "The solid waste industry provides an essential service in every town and city throughout America, and it needs a stronger voice and presence in dealing with the media, the regulatory community and with other groups and organizations that can affect the industry's programs and goals."

Previously Metzger served as communications manager for the American Plastics Council, where he managed a variety of media relations, marketing research and business-to-business communications activities; as director of communications for the National AIDS fund, a non-profit organization with affiliates in more than 40 cities; and in a variety of public affairs positions at the U.S. Department of Justice, Republican National Committee, and with a former member of the U.S. Congress.
