Shawnee Mission, KS-based Deffenbaugh Industries Inc. recently laid off 40 employees citing the downturn in the housing market as having hurt operations. However, the company has close to 2,000 employees companywide and most of the layoffs are heavy-equipment operators who worked in the company's rock quarries, a business that is directly related to construction, not waste management. Deffenbaugh is the biggest privately owned waste company in the region.
