Monmouth County, New Jersey Buys Private Landfill
In a striking reversal of the usual trend, Monmouth County, New Jersey took the unusual step of expanding its landfill by acquiring a privately-owned landfill. The measure guarantees a destination for its waste for at least the next 30 years. The county, which has run its own landfill in Tinton Falls since 1976, plans to take over the adjacent 260 acres known as Shrewsbury Disposal Landfill, which operated between 1963 and 1981. Under the terms of the agreement, the county pays nothing for the site which otherwise would have cost millions of dollars, but will instead spend a similar sum to "mine" the site and modernize it with required pollution control measures. Bill Gates' Fund Increases Stake in Republic Services
Bill Gates' investment fund, Cascade Investment LLC, increased its stake in waste hauler Republic Services Inc. (NYSE: RSG) to 15.1% from 13.7%, according to a recent regulatory filing. The Microsoft Corp. chairman's fund did not reveal when it bought the shares or their price in the "passive" filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Waste Services President and COO Wilcox has Left Company
Waste Services, Inc. said that Chuck Wilcox had left his position as president and chief operating officer. Chairman and CEO David Sutherland-Yoest has assumed the position of president and will take on responsibility for all of the company's operations. "We are extremely grateful for the contribution Chuck has made to the growth of our company," Sutherland-Yoest said in a statement. US EPA Order Army to Clean Up Fort Meade
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered the Army to clean up 14 hazardous waste sites at Fort Meade in Maryland and adjacent properties that are part of the Patuxent Research Refuge. The Army is expected to correct contamination that includes solvents, heavy metals, explosives, arsenic and PCBs. Munitions have been found throughout the former range training areas of the base, including parts of the Little Patuxent River. While elevated levels of pesticides and explosive compounds have been detected in aquifers, the EPA says no other drinking water sources are affected. Michigan to Turn Canadian Trash into Energy
The governor of Michigan, back from a visit to Sweden and Germany, announced plans to explore energy from waste among other alternative fuels. Gov.
