New Unit Completes Trans-Atlantic, Intermodal Packaging, Shipping Project for British Nuclear Group
MHF Logistical Solutions Inc. (MHF-LS), a leading provider of packaging, transportation and technical services for generators and shippers of radioactive, hazardous and non- hazardous waste, materials and byproducts, said today that it has launched a new subsidiary to manage its growing business in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe.
Gene Gleason, MHF-LS' vice president for government affairs and international initiatives, has been appointed managing director of the new subsidiary, MHFLS-UK, Ltd., based in Cheshire, England.
"Expanding our international business is an important element of our growth strategy," said Richard Santello, MHF-LS president and CEO. "The U.K. nuclear market is particularly attractive now because of its robust level of plant decommissioning activity, and because of the British nuclear industry's emphasis on environmental safety and its openness to innovation.
"Our initial focus is the U.K. nuclear industry but we expect to reach out quickly to other generators and shippers of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, materials and byproducts in Britain, Europe and beyond," Santello said.
Added Gleason, "We are excited to offer our technical and operational expertise, as well as our packaging products and services, around the world."
Gleason noted that MHF-LS seeks partners, both in the U.K. and elsewhere, as it continues to expand its international presence.
The announcement of the new subsidiary, meanwhile, comes as MHFLS-UK, Ltd., has recently completed a major project for British Nuclear Group, a leading operator of nuclear power plants in the U.K.
The assignment, undertaken with partners W.H. Bowker Ltd. and Gravatom Engineering Services Ltd., was to provide packaging, technical services and transportation logistics for the packaging and movement of radioactively contaminated lead from a site in England to a recycling facility in the United States.
MHFLS-UK, Ltd., built and managed a unique fit-for-purpose packaging system designed specifically for British Nuclear Group. Metal CO-18 containers were used to package the cargo.
"Our innovative packaging and transportation solutions created the opportunity for recycling to be a cost-effective option," said Gleason. "It's an example of how safeguarding the environment can go hand in hand with commercial success."
On-site management of the packaging and loading process was managed by MHF-LS' Jim Viebrock, a highly experienced nuclear fuel cycle expert. (For more on Viebrock's expertise, please visit www.mhfls.com/transloader/1206/index.html.)
