Up To 1,200 New Cars Support Low-cost, Environmentally Favorable Waste-by-rail

TransLoad America Inc., a leader in rail-based transfer, transportation and disposal of solid waste, announced today that it has awarded a contract to National Steel Car to construct up to 1,200 gondola railcars to service its transload facilities and landfills. TransLoad America ("TLA") and National Steel Car collaborated on the design and engineering of the 286 gross rail load, 6,400 cubic foot railcars to maximize the efficiency of shipping construction and demolition debris ("C&D"), baled municipal solid waste ("MSW"), as well as other products.

The railcars are custom designed with high sides and no interior bracing to optimize the loading and unloading efficiency for both C&D and baled MSW. TLA recently acquired proprietary baling technology that produces highly compressed, shrink-wrapped MSW, sealed in several layers of impermeable plastic film. The baling process significantly increases density and eliminates odor and leakage. (More information on TLA's baling technology is available at www.transloadamerica.com.)

"The upgrade and expansion of our railcar fleet is a big step in TransLoad America's mission to become the national leader in ‘waste-by-rail,'" said James Newell, President, TLA Rail Logistics. "These customized cars will further improve the economics of TLA's growing rail-based business, which continues to demonstrate the cost and environmental advantages of transporting waste by rail over trucking."

The railcars are being manufactured at National Steel Car's manufacturing plant in Hamilton, Ontario, and TLA has taken delivery of the first 400 cars, bringing the size of its active fleet to 657 railcars.
