Apex, NC Mayor Keith Weatherly last week demanded an exact accounting of the chemicals inside the warehouse that exploded on October 5, 2006. The owner of the warehouse, The Environmental Quality Co., released a somewhat limited 19-page inventory. That list includes toxic heavy metals such as mercury and lead, benzene, potassium cyanide, and pentachlorophenol. Also present were various chlorinated compounds including vinyl chloride. EQ spokesman Scott Maris says that the company has not yet had the time or the manpower to provide the public with a more comprehensive list. The company also says that its toxicologists have taken more than 220,000 samples of Apex's air in the last several days and have found no unusual pollutants since early Friday after the fire. Inspectors evidently are still processing the samples to determine exactly what chemicals were in those early samples.
