English municipal authorities in Hartlepool have rejected a British firm's plans to dismantle several of the US Navy's rusting "ghost ships" at its Graythorp yard. The firm, Able UK says that it will appeal the decision, especially since three of the vessels are already on site. For its part, the firm claims that the multimillion dollar contract will bring over 700 jobs to the town and create a world-class ship recycling facility. Critics charge that it would make the borough into a toxic waste dump. Able UK executive Peter Stephenson has urged people to ignore the scaremongering and concentrate on the facts. If not for the words "toxic" and "ghost," the simple dismantling of ships would be a non-issue.
