Environmental Industry Associations Receives Seventh OSHA-Training Grant for Reducing Fatalities in the Solid Waste Industry

The Environmental Industry Associations (EIA), a Washington, DC-based non-profit trade association, is developing a new training video on safety awareness for supervisors and employees under a seventh Susan Harwood Training Grant awarded to the Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF), Alexandria, Va., by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). EREF has contracted with EIA for its solid waste industry expertise since receiving its first Susan Harwood grant in October 2000.

Under the terms of the arrangement between EREF and EIA, over the next six months a training video will be developed for solid waste employers and employees covering common safety issues such as lock out tag out, backing, working in traffic, and avoiding contact with chemicals, sharps, and other hazardous materials.

"Unlike the previous videos that focused on safety at specific facilities or operations within the waste industry, this video will provide an overview of general safety concerns, highlighting the areas with the highest injury rates," said EIA President and CEO Bruce Parker. He added, "We are committed to improving worker safety in the solid waste industry before problems occur."

During WasteExpo 2007 in Atlanta on Tuesday, May 8, EIA will hold a boxed lunch educational session on safety where it will premiere the new video and distribute related educational materials. Other EIA safety videos focus on reducing the hazards associated with residential collection, landfills, and transfer stations. Also available are the EIA safety manual, American National Standards Institute Z245 standards, and a comprehensive program on driver safety.
