According to state officials in South Carolina, the US Department of Energy has reported a radioactive leak from the DOE's Savannah River Site. Officials at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) report that liquid radioactive material has leaked from the site's Saltstone Disposal Facility, evidently due to cracks in the walls. The Saltstone vault contains the "low activity" portion of the high-level radioactive waste at the nuclear weapons site. DOE officials maintain that despite the cracks, there has not been any health risk posed to workers or the public.
