Plasco Energy Group Inc. has begun construction on a commercial plasma gasification plant in the City of Ottawa, Ontario. The facility will demonstrate a technology that essentially produces lightning to convert some 85 tonnes (94 tons) per day of MSW into synthetic gas. Furthermore, the entire process occurs in a sealed system that produces zero air emissions. The synthetic gas will in turn power engines to generate 4 megawatts of electricity (enough to power 4,600 households). Air quality from the engines significantly exceeds the regulatory requirements for Canada, the US and the EU. In addition to synthetic gas, the process also produces a solid glass-like material, useful in the production of concrete, asphalt and other industrial products.

Also remarkable about the project is its financing. $6.6 million of the $27 million project came from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) (www.sdtc.ca), a foundation created by the government of Canada to stimulate the development of clean technologies. The balance of funds comes from a consortium led by Plasco that includes the City of Ottawa and HERA Holdings S.A.
