Slidell Landfill, north of New Orleans, is seeking a permit from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality to expand to 48 acres and to increase its height to 125 feet. The existing site is reaching capacity from debris from Hurricane Katrina. The DEQ is expected to grant the permit, although local citizens have begun a letter writing campaign that may slow or even halt the process.
