The City of Toronto, in preparation of its commitment to stem the flow of waste going to Michigan by 2010, has agreed to purchase its own landfill. The City Council approved a letter of intent to purchase the Green Lane Landfill in southwestern Ontario for a staggering $442 million. The landfill having recently received a 10 million ton expansion permit assures the city of 15 years worth of its own disposal capacity. Currently, their waste, about 85 truckloads per day or 750 thousand tons per year, goes to the Carleton Farms Landfill in Wayne County Michigan. Still unanswered is what will happen to the other three million tons of waste going from Canada into Michigan every year?
