Seattle area Teamsters, representing garbage-truck mechanics working for Waste Management, and who had been without a contract since Dec. 31, 2005, finally ratified a contract, ending a five day strike. Waste Management held on to a key objective; passing a large share of the health-care premium costs to employees. The mechanics received a two dollar raise, from $24 to $26 per hour and significant employer pension contributions. During the strike drivers refused to cross picket lines, halting garbage collection in an area with 170,000 homes.
