Michigan State Republican Party Chairman Saul Anuzis accused U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow of staging an ineffective agreement with Ontario to halt imported trash. Stabenow arranged a voluntary agreement with Ontario to phase out up to 40% of the solid waste imported into Michigan over two years, and cease them altogether in four. Anuzis claims the agreement is symbolic because there is no law to enforce it. Stabenow stated that because the agreement is voluntary, it is not vulnerable to law suits by companies hoping to stop the deal. Anuzis accused Stabenow of not supporting the House measure to legislate on the issue, but Stabenow denied this, saying that she tried to introduce similar legislation in the Senate. It was because of lack of legislative action on the issue that she sought the voluntary agreement with Canada. Stabenow stated that Anuzis' accusations were political.
