Army Urged To Neutralize Mustard Agent

Date: September 7, 2006

A national chemical weapons demilitarization group, Chemical Weapons Working Group (CWWG), is urging the Army to neutralize rather than incinerate old stockpiles of mustard gas. CWWG fears that mercury would be released through the incineration of mustard gas and cites stricter emissions standards that the EPA may soon implement. The cost of construction and operation of a neutralization plant is approximately $500 million. The Army would have to construct four plants or refit the four existing incinerators with neutralization equipment.
