New York City recently held its final public hearing before the Mayor and City Council approve a contentious overhauling solid waste plan that was originally presented in October 2004. Mayor Bloomberg's plan is intended to improve the flow of waste by stipulating the construction of four city-owned marine transfer stations. As would be expected, objections to the plan come from residents whose neighborhoods would host these facilities. Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty called it a very sensitive issue in which "Garbage rises to the top very quickly…especially in your neighborhood."
