Metech International LLC, of Worcester, Mass., has begun operating a $1.25-million processing line for electronic scrap that shreds discarded electronic equipment and sorts it into material streams.

Sam Advani, the company's president, said the new equipment destroys computers, hard drives and telephone systems to provide environmentally correct materials recovery. The company said its processing intake consists primarily of electronic manufacturing scrap, obsolete inventory, end-of-life electronics and nonconforming materials.

The company, which refines some of the metallics, also has plants in Gilroy, Calif., and Penang, Malaysia.

All three facilities are certified for quality and environmental controls under criteria of the International Organization for Standardization.

The two U.S. plants also meet certification criteria set by the International Association of Electronics Recyclers.
