Macomb County (www.macombcountymi.gov) and Waste Management (www.wm.com) appear to be close to a deal whereby the company's Pine Tree Acres landfill will reduce Canadian imports in exchange for county permission to expand. Under the proposed agreement, the Pine Tree Acres landfill would reduce acceptance of waste originating in Canada from 80% of current volume down to 25%. As a voluntary agreement by the landfill, it avoids any conflict with free-trade laws that prohibit governments from interfering with interstate and Canadian commerce.
