Computer company Apple has extended its computer recycling program in the US and is offering free computer take-back and recycling upon the purchase of a new Macintosh system, starting from June 2006.

Apple said that US customers purchasing a new Mac through the company's online or retail stores will receive free shipping and environmentally friendly disposal of their old computer as part of the recycling programme. Apple ensures that equipment received through the programme is recycled in the US, with no hazardous material being shipped overseas.

Apple provides a free drop-off recycling location at its Cupertino headquarters and claims to have recycled over 90% of electronic equipment collected since 2001 under its existing US recycling programme.

Apple has also confirmed that its fifth generation iPod, iPod nano and iPod shuffle are 100% compliant with the forthcoming restrictions of hazardous substances (RoHS) in California and Europe, ahead of the EU's 1 July deadline.
