In response to California's state law prohibiting residents from dumping cell phones and batteries in municipal waste, Verizon Wireless is now accepting all dead rechargeable batteries, not just cell phone batteries, for recycling year-round. In 2005, more than 850,000 phones were donated to Verizon's "HopeLine" program, which refurbished and resold the phones. The company has taken in a total of 2.5 million phones since the national program's inception in 2001. More information: www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.
