Seventeen Companies Pay For Cleanup of New York Superfund Landfill

Seventeen companies, including Ford Motor Co., have reached a tentative deal to pay $4.7 million for dumping chemical wastes in the Ramapo Landfill in Rockland County, N.Y. Over the course of the past 23 years, the state has spent $13 million, along with the federal government, to contain the problem. The 96-acre landfill, open from 1971 to 1989, was named to the federal Superfund list in 1983.
