Tennessee Falls Behind In Inspecting Landfills

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation had hoped to complete its inspection of closed landfills by December 2004, but acknowledges that it has only evaluated 61 percent of the sites-70 of 115-to this point. Officials blame the lack of progress on inadequate funding. The project began in September 2003 after an industrial chemical seeped from a closed Dickinson County landfill and contaminated area wells.
