The Old Gentilly Landfill in New Orleans reopened six weeks ago after a 20-year period of closure, but has already become one of the area's busiest landfills. The New Orleans Times-Picayune (www.timespicayune.com) reports that the landfill has taken in up to 100,000 cubic yards of debris on some days. The landfill still does not meet some basic state environmental requirements, but was reopened in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to speed cleanup efforts. The reopening has proven controversial, with opponents decrying the landfill's use while supporters say it is a necessary short-term fix.
