Waste Management Reports Second-Quarter Profit

Waste Management (NYSE: WMI) has reported second-quarter net income rose to $527 million, or 92 cents per share, up from $216 million, or 37 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Adjusting for special items-including a tax benefit of $311 million and charges for selling or impairment to several operations-the income would have been $219 million, or 38 cents per share. Second-quarter revenue rose to $3.29 billion from $3.14 billion. The company expects to divest certain collection businesses and transfer stations that account for approximately $400 million in annual revenue.
