New Jersey environmental officials have filed suit against W.R. Grace & Co. (www.grace.com) and two of its employees alleging false statements and misrepresentations were made in a 1995 report on a chemical plant. The report, prepared by an independent environmental consultant, involved the closing of a plant in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, that made fire-protection and vermiculite products. Grace and 61 of its U.S. subsidiaries and affiliates filed for bankruptcy in April 2001 because of the effects of asbestos lawsuits. And in February, Grace and seven current or former executives were charged with conspiring to endanger residents in Libby, Montana and concealing health risks from mining asbestos-containing vermiculite. Grace has denied the charges.
