Environmental Group Cautions against Epic Star Wars Waste

Date: May 11, 2005

Environmental groups are viewing the release of the latest Star Wars movie this week with a skeptical eye, as they anticipate thousands of tons of discarded toys and packaging headed to landfills. Earth911.org notes that none of the movie's "action figures" can be recycled, and will sit in landfills for decades. The group recommends parents buy recyclable batteries for toys, recycle product packaging, and donate old toys to charitable organizations. In 1999, when the fourth Star Wars movie was released, more than 250 million action figures were sold; Earth911.org put the total weight of those figures at 5,700 tons.
