Waste Services Inc. (www.capitalenvironmental.com) has sued Waste Management Inc. (www.wm.com) in U.S. District Court in Florida, charging Waste Management with anti-competitive behavior. Waste Services accuses Waste Management of violating antitrust laws by attempting to block Waste Services from owning and operating an Orlando-area landfill. Waste Services seeks $25 million in damages, charging that Waste Management tried several times to prevent the company from purchasing the landfill in order to preserve a regional monopoly. Waste Services did eventually purchase the landfill. Waste Management officials say the suit is without merit.
