The U.S., Mexican, and Texas state governments are working together to address landfill fires like one that occurred recently in Matamoros, Mexico. The EPA has created the U.S.-Mexico Border 2012 Program (www.epa.gov/usmexicoborder), a 10-year effort designed to solve public health and environment issues along the 3,100-mile border. The landfill fire was begun by trash diggers, who were searching for aluminum and copper to resell in Monterrey, Mexico. The EPA (www.epa.gov) and the U.S. State Department (www.state.gov) are offering technical assistance to create a landfill feasibility study; a combination of loans and grants could fund landfill construction.
