Foster Wheeler North America Corp. has been awarded a contract valued in excess of $18 million by SNC-Lavalin Power Inc. of Redmond, Washington. Foster Wheeler's Canadian subsidiary, headquartered in Ontario, will design and supply a 55 MW boiler for Fibrominn LLC's landmark green energy project in Benson, Minnesota, the first U.S. power plant to use poultry litter as its primary fuel. The Benson plant will burn over 700,000 tons of poultry litter and other biomass fuels per year under a long-term supply agreement with Minnesota poultry producers. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, has approved a settlement agreement between the trustee of Resource Technology Corporation, Chastang Landfill Inc., Waste Management Holding, Inc. and Consortium Service Management Group, Inc. The startup of the Mobile, Ala. Chastang site's gas production was delayed by a legal dispute between RTC and Waste Management. U.S., Mexico Work To Stem Border Landfill Fires
The U.S., Mexican, and Texas state governments are working together to address landfill fires like one that occurred recently in Matamoros, Mexico. The EPA has created the U.S.-Mexico Border 2012 Program (www.epa.gov/usmexicoborder), a 10-year effort designed to solve public health and environment issues along the 3,100-mile border. The landfill fire was begun by trash diggers, who were searching for aluminum and copper to resell in Monterrey, Mexico. Rhode Island Could Increase Fees To Promote Recycling
Rhode Island Gov. Donald L. Carcieri (www.governor.state.ri.us) has proposed making local communities pay increased fees for dumping waste at the state's Central Landfill if they fail to recycle 20 percent of their waste. Grace, Executives Charged With Conspiracy In Montana Asbestos Case
W.R. Grace & Co. (www.grace.com) and seven of its current or former executives have been charged with conspiring to endanger residents in Libby, Montana (www.libbymontana.com) and concealing health risks from asbestos-contaminated vermiculite, according to the U.S. Justice Department (www.usdoj.gov). The 10-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury charges t he defendants with conspiracy, clean-air violations, wire fraud and obstruction of justice involving asbestos-related diseases which were linked to its former vermiculite mining and processing operations in Libby. Louisiana Official Admits To Taking Bribe For Landfill Vote
Former Livingston Parish Council member Robert Ringo has admitted to the U.S. Attorney's Office that he accepted a $17,000 cash bribe from a local businessman in 2000 to transfer a landfill permit for the Woodside Landfill. In 2000, the council voted 5-4 to transfer the parish's landfill permit to Waste Management (www.wm.com) in exchange for royalties on the facility's operation.
