EarthFirst Technologies (www.earthfirsttech.com) and Oak Ridge National Laboratories (www.ornl.gov) have completed a five-year R&D effort to develop a new recycling technology for tires and other solid wastes, known as the Catalystic Activated Vacuum Distillation (CAVD) processing plant. The proprietary process recycles tires by heating the rubber in an oxygen-less chamber, then extracting the valuable constituent elements that originally made up the tire. A CAVD processing plant can recycle 80,000 pounds of tires per day. Other applications currently under development include municipal solid waste, meat and bone meal, sludge, wood chips sawdust and hydrocarbon contaminated soil.
