W.R. Grace and Co. (www.grace.com) has reported that it has been named a target of a federal grand jury investigation which could be related to its former vermiculite mining and processing activities in Libby, Montana. The investigation involves possible obstructions of justice, violations of federal environmental laws, and conspiracy to violate those environmental laws. Grace owned and operated the vermiculite mine in Libby from 1963 to 1990; vermiculite ore found there was contaminated with a form of asbestos that spread throughout the town of Libby. The bankrupt company is currently appealing a ruling from the District Court of Montana ordering it to pay $54.5 million in cleanup reimbursement.
