The Federal Aviation Administration must approve a landfill proposed for Marion, Ill. before any construction can begin on the project. The landfill was originally proposed as a municipal waste repository, which would require FAA approval, but could be changed to take only inert waste. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has already granted the landfill a permit to operate on 189 acres and dispose of 37.15 million cubic yards of waste.
