RBRC, RadioShack Team Up For National Cell Phone Recycling Week
October 11-18 marks the first-ever National Cell Phone Recycling Week. As part of Call2Recycle, the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation's cell phone recycling program, in connection with RadioShack, is encouraging consumers to drop off old cell phones at local RadioShack locations. Georgia EPD Ordered To Reconsider Landfill Permit Denial
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division will appeal an administrative law judge's order requiring it to reconsider a landfill permit request in Taliaferro County. The judge overturned the EPD's denial of a permit by Complex Environmental Inc., saying that EPD Director Carol Couch "exceeded her legal authority." EPA Plans To Take Radioactive Waste From Mass. Landfill
The federal government has finalized plans to remove radioactive waste from the former Shpack landfill in Norton, Mass. The EPA and Army Corps of Engineers will oversee the $43 million project, scheduled to be completed by summer 2006. Under the plan, 35,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil will be hauled from the site. Simi Valley, Calif. Landfill Prepares For Major Expansion
The Simi Valley (Calif.) Landfill has purchased 2,800 acres in a move to double its capacity. The landfill itself will expand from 185 to 400 acres, which will increase its volume from 3,000 to 6,000 tons per day. FAA Requires Approval Of Illinois Landfill Project
The Federal Aviation Administration must approve a landfill proposed for Marion, Ill. before any construction can begin on the project. The landfill was originally proposed as a municipal waste repository, which would require FAA approval, but could be changed to take only inert waste.
