The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the federal EPA, and other state agencies have praised Virginia healthcare facilities that are voluntarily reducing pollution and waste in the Virginia Hospitals for a Healthy Environment program. The program helps hospitals work with the state to develop plans to properly manage and dispose of waste and pollutants, and more than 50 facilities have joined. The Virginia program, established in 2003, is based on the national Hospitals for a Healthy Environment initiative. EPA officials said they have held up Virginia's program as a model for other states.
