Judge Strikes Down Measure To Block San Diego County Landfill

Date: September 1, 2004

Source: News Room

A judge has ordered that a measure intended to stop the development of a San Diego County landfill be removed from the November ballot. The superior court judge determined that errors and inaccuracies in the petitions that qualified the initiative for the ballot raised questions over whether the voters actually knew what they were signing. The measure sought to overturn a 1994 initiative approved by county voters that permitted the development of the landfill in Gregory Canyon. The decision comes as a crushing defeat for the opponents of the landfill, who had collected 83,000 signatures against the project.
