Pennsylvania environmental officials have rejected a request by Waste Management Inc. to expand the 276-acre Pottstown landfill in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The decision means the Pottstown Landfill will be forced to close, according to the Department of Environmental Protection. Waste Management had applied for a vertical expansion of the landfill, which opened in 1947. Residents had complained about the landfill's effect on public health. Waste Management owns 21 of the approximately 50 landfills in Pennsylvania.
