Arkansas Recycling On The Upswing

A new report from the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality indicates that Arkansans recycled 34% of the solid waste from households and businesses last year, and the state is on track to meet its target level of 40% recycling by 2005. According to the report, 1.4 million tons of waste was recycled in Arkansas last year, but the amount of trash generated is also on the rise. The state produced more than 4 million tons of solid waste in 2002, up from 3.6 million tons in 2001. But the recycling saved the state more than $40 million in landfill disposal costs last year, the report noted.
